WEEK 12
Monday, March 16th
- Correction (Writing) : Two photographs about the voiceless in South Africa at the time of the Apartheid
« Native carpenter, Philip Mbhele » by Margaret Bourke White
This black and white picture uses a low-angle view. It puts the emphasis on the man who is shouting. As it is a close-up, the viewers can see his facial expressions which show his determination to fight the Pass Laws. On his suit, he's wearing a tag « We don't wan't passes ». The photographer stands very close from his model, so we can almost feel the intensity of this man.
« Showing the pass » by Ernest Cole
The photographer used a high-angle with a wide view. There a re thre characters. One man in the center who is bending to open his suitcase. He's surrounded by two police officers who are waiting for him to find what he's looking for.
The impression given is that of oppression and of domination.
My personal opinion (which can be different from yours) is that the M.B. White's picture is the most powerful. Indeed, with the use of the close-up, we can feel the indignation of that man and of all the coloured people of South Africa during the Apartheid.
